Classic & traditional engagement photography in Dupont Circle, with a little edge at Pearl Dive…
DC residents, Betsy & Evan, chose Pearl Dive and the Spanish Steps in Dupont Circle for their engagement photography session. The locations really fit them perfectly as the steps were more of a classic, traditional location and Pearl Dive has more of an edge.
The Spanish steps are a hidden gem in DC and were also the location of Evan’s clever wedding proposal. He popped the question in November, as they walked from their apartment to Dupont Circle.
They began climbing the Spanish steps when, Evan started walking back down the steps (in the direction that they had came from). It looked to Betsy as if they were lost, but that is when Evan got down on one knee. 😉
While these two are planning a classic, DC wedding at the St. Regis in Washington, DC, and want some traditional wedding portraits, they also value creative photography as well, so finding a photographer whose style combines both elements was key for them.
Betsy said she immediately thought of the unique photos I had captured of her friend Kyle’s wedding in DC at the Carnegie Institution for Science, and the “Vogue” style photo of the bridal party as well as the other editorial, photo-journalistic and unique images from his wedding.
Here is a more creative photo of Betsy & Evan, this is actually their reflection in a pool as they reach across to each other on the Spanish stairs.
Next, we headed to Pearl Dive, one of Betsy & Evan’s favorite hang-outs. Betsy said they have the best food, drinks and staff in DC and love visiting for brunch especially for the Sunday Dive burger special, and gave a shout out to their favorite bartender, Enzo.
Pearl Dive is right down the street from thier apartment, so it’s the place they go with friends and the first place they recommend to people who come to visit.
Pearl Dive actually invited them to take photos both in Pearl Dive and the hip, upstairs bar, Black Jack, before the restaurant opened for the day, which was so perfect for Betsy & Evan it had just the perfect amount of style and edge that they were hoping to capture in their engagement photographs.
Betsy said she loves Evan’s energy and positive attitude, his quick-wit, his ability to stay calm under pressure, his strong family values and the way he can always make her smile and laugh.
Evan said he loves Betsy’s smile, mind, beauty & the crackle of her laugh. He appreciates how smart she is and her commitment to living a healthy lifestyle & dedication to their relationship.
Cheers, guys!
I love the rock & roll vibe of Black Jack— it reminds me a little of Evan & Betsy’s taste in music. While they love all genres, they recently saw one of their favorite shows ever, The Rolling Stones, this place feels like rock to me. I also liked the reflection here while Evan liked that it said “golf” in lights haha.
Sports and travel are two other hobbies that this DC couple shares. They have been to many amazing destinations together (London, Chicago, San Fransico, Aspen, NYC & Cape Cod to mention a few). They also enjoy sports, whether it’s watching Nationals games with their friends or or participating first hand in sports themselves (golfing, swimming, skiing, running, etc.)
Betsy has a pretty awesome eye for style and loves classic design with a bit of an edge. Evan proposed with a diamond engagement ring with a split shank band– just gorgeous!
I loved that the windows in Pearl Dive looked like bronze portholes and placed Betsy’s engagement ring in one of them, what a cool, curved reflection!
Betsy & Evan, it was such a treat to meet you guys in person and be introduced to Pearl Dive and Black Jack! Thanks for sharing your story and your favorite places with me. I am beyond excited for your upcoming St Regis wedding– less than 4 months to go!!!
